Halloween costumes don't need to be scary but a lot of people love it when they are! Scary costumes are great for Halloween Costume Contests, Haunts, and Adult themed parties. Kids also have fun getting scary on Halloween, and honestly a kid decked out as a zombie or bloody skeleton or clown is often scarier than an adult. Scary face paint designs can elevate your costume.
We will go over different scary face paint ideas to go with your costumes. We will talk about the makeup that you can use to create these Halloween Scary Looks, and how to make your designs last as long or as short as you need them.

Skull face paint on a skeleton body is always a hit if you get those bones and shading right on the face. Your skeleton can either look goofy or terrifying depending on how much time you put into getting it right and adding the details.
You can add to the scare factor by using face paint or fake blood to add dripping blood from the eye sockets or the mouth.
Here are some tips on creating a skull that will make people freeze in place and take a double take.
The key to making your skeleton face paint design to look extra scary is to make the eyes look as hallow as possible and shape the bones so that they look a little diabolical with dramatic changes from flat and wide to thin bones and lots of shading to contour them to make them look real.
Tracy Nicholson, from Face Painting 4 You Hull, created this beautifully scary sugar skull. The chunky glitter and lacy linework gives an antique effect. Look in resale shops for costume pieces like hats, scarves, fake flower wreathes and more to match your sugar skull face paint design.
Belinda Vill Soto painted this amazing skeleton calavera sugar skull face paint on the face and upper body. Look at how the eye sockets are not just solid black inside but have a gradient of reds and browns with black shaded in. The creates a hallowed out haunting look.
The warm tones in the flowers and face paint makeup in these sugar skulls done by Face Painting by Hannah is so magical. The burgundy's and gold over the smooth white base really pop. Antsy Pants Paints Face Painting and Body Art 's master artist, Angelique Desiree Thompson, face painted and bejeweled this incredible Jeweled Skull with metal pointed studs and crystal looking teeth. Looking for a cool and scary idea for a couple to wear out together. Nothing says Halloween Romance like a pair of Voodoo skull designs. Face Art by Terri Terri Thomson created a scary combo of voodoo skulls to inspire you. Add plastic shrunken skulls, feathers and bones to complete your look. There are a lot of symbols that you can add to your skull design for good luck.
Kellee Dee scary of Blue Kangaroo Entertainment paitned this cool scary swirly skull face paint mask. These loose thin flowing lines give a spirit like effect to the skull, it could also be a demon. Note how she added paint to the hair to tie the face into the head.

Natasha Tee created this super cool melting skull using face paint and special fx products. You could make the dripping effect with 3D Gel or Liquid Latex.

Safdar Mohammed, of Splash Face and Body Painting, used just face paint to create this melting stretching skin. This effect looks great on zombies or acid burn victims. First sketch out the areas where the skin will be and fill in the openings with what would be underneath showing through.

If you are going somewhere where everyone knows scary clowns will be lurking, have fun creating your own terrifying creation!
Vampires are all the rage, now more than ever. Shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twilight, Dracula, and Dark Shadows have induced a love for vampires that can't be quenched. You will notice that you might not need a lot of face paint to create a vampire look. A light base of Starblend Moonlight White with Colorme Pro Black eye shadow in the eyes and red lips could get you there. Add on some Blood Lust vampire fangs like the ones we have for Dental Distortions and you are all set! If you want fuller coverage you can use the powder wet or get a basic face paint set for a water based makeup or something like Proaiir Solids Thriller hybrid face paint kit for a look that will last a night out on the dance floor.
Mini Pérez Soto created this Vampire makeup to have a scary face paint effect with fake vampire bites, bruising and fake blood. Use a plum color that you can find in a special effects palette Mehron Bruise Wheel or try Superstar Plum. Notice the super fine veins spreading out from the eyes like a web would flow from a center point.
Gemma Louise Rollin painted this cartoon like monster high green zombie. This is a good choice for kids and people who want a to look scary but not so bloody.
The devil is a classic Halloween costume. Going as the devil doesn't mean that you are going to hell. Have fun with shading those scary features and playing up your cheek bones, nose and demonic eyes. You can find prothetic horns at a costume store, or you can make them out of paper, foam or mold them your self.

Thomas Bartley was very creative with this Blue Icey Devil which could also double as a horned Vampire. Scary face paint can always have a twist. There are no rules to limit your creativity! Superstar Petrol Blue would be a perfect color for a design like this.
Since there are no limits to your Halloween Design, if you want to be a skull and a devil, why not? If you love to have some shimmer and bling, just do it! Thomas Paints created this cool devilish skull to stand out in the crowd. The dripping glitter from the eyes, horn bling and mouth are a nice extra.
Sophia Vega has won contests with her version of a very creepy Bloody Scarecrow design. She glued burlap to her face to get this horrific effect. By using a very dark black face paint in the eyes and mouth holes, the mask looks hollow inside.

This scary makeup idea was submitted by Judi’s Facepainting & Body Art. Judi Walker created the makeup for this hauntingly dead bride. Runny paint in black or red and a pale face and smudged lipstick bring this design together.
Wiccan Makeup for those who want to appear as witches on Halloween can include the crescent moon, star pentagram / pentacle and runes text on the face and body. Milena Makup Artist shaded a bruisy burgundy color behind the pentacle and around the eyes to add a creepy factor to this beautiful witch. Superstar Plum would be perfect for this, or the Mehron Bruise Wheel.
This gothic witch by Natty Batty is another great example for some scary makeup for Halloween. The fine black cracks coming from her eyes and mouth make her look like an evil witch. The plastic surgery gone wrong is a perfect intro to the next scary face paint category.
You might not want to be anything in particular for Halloween but you like the idea of looking like you were attacked by a bear, zombie, clown or maybe just got in street fight. You could also look like you tried to fix yourself up with some pretty horribly done stitches that aren't quite keeping everything together.

Frankenstein (really Dr. Frankenstein's Monster) has been a classic Halloween makeup look for decades. Here are some great examples of Frankie inspired makeup designs by some really amazing face painters!
Milena Potekhina really got to the heart of Frankenstein with this better than movie quality makeup. By using greens, yellows and whites for the skin tone, it almost looks like living green flesh. The red under the eyes blending into the dark shadows helps build that heavy eyebrow he is famous for. The elongated nostrils, deep smile lines and square chin shading really worked on his monster like features.
Milena Potekhina took this cute take on the daughter of Frankenstein, Frankie, from Monster High. This soft and sweet face paint makeup was done in white with a slight tint of green to it. The purple eye shadow and exaggerated painted eye lashes make her look like on of the dolls.
What is a good green makeup for Frankenstein?
We carry so many shades of green and you will want a few shades of greens or green and yellow to make Frankie pop.

Monsters have so much wiggle room for creativity, that these are one of my favorite Halloween looks.

Kellee Dee of Blue Kangaroo Entertainment painted this epic scary mouth eyes around her eyes!
Safdar Mohammed created this scary face after being inspired by orcs, trolls, goblins and the such! Can you imagine turning around and seeing this character looking at you? Safdar used skin tone face paints like you might find in the Diamond FX Skin Palette or Diamond FX Beast Palette. Wolfe also has a smaller version called the Wolfe FX Monster Palette.
Jackie York Make-Up Your Mind turned herself into The Beast with horns face paint and prosthetics!
Kay Norris, from Sparkle And Pop Face and Body Art, painted this half face venom face paint design with just black, white and red.
Long wiggly melted black lines with chubby tear drop ends are key to get this wild venom look. Make sure to highlight the gums, blacks lines and tongue with white to make it look wet and shiny! Study the eye shape well to make sure it looks evil and not silly.
Gemma Louise Rollin painted this horrific Blood Dripping Ghost. She even included a clue to how this person may have died with a gaping bullet hole like wound in the forehead.
You can use water based face paint for easy to wash off looks. You can do almost any thing with these looks. These wash off with soap and water at the end of the night. If you need them to last a long time you can seal them with a product like Ben Nye Final Seal or ProAiir Prolong Sealer.

Scary eyes usually will involve dark shading, outlining, blood dripping, fake ripped eye lids, veins coming out from the edges of the eye, black slime dripping out of the eyes, bruised eyes or stitches, welts or fake burn effects around the eye.
You can also add wrinkles and scars by using a product like Rigid Collodian from Mehron.
At Jest Paint we have a lot of cool and disgusting items on our Special FX page. You will find CREEPY CLAWS in a few different styles that are press on nails that will last all day. These fake nails will blow your Halloween costume out of the park. They are the finishing touch to a vampire / zombie / warlock / witch look.
You will need to order some high quality face paint like the products we have at Jest Paint, or use someone good quality beauty makeup to do horror makeup at home. Don't skip out on the fake blood. Making your own with corn syrup and red food dye could leave you stained for awhile. Try to resist buying cheap makeup that pops up in Halloween Stores. They may not have the best ingredients and could leave you itchy, they might never dry or they might flake off, or they might just be impossible to apply. Stick to well know brands like Fusion Body Art, Paradise, TAG, Diamond FX, Graftobian, Kryolan etc.
Mehron Coagulated Blood Gel Demo. This goopy blood will make a simple makeup look stand out.
Make sure to protect your bathroom so that you don't drip fake blood on a white rug. Plan at least 2 hours to apply your makeup for the first time. You might need even more time if it is a complicated scary look.
You can line the bottom your eyes with face paint or liquid eye liner that is not waterproof. Then you can add eye drops to your eyes and squeeze them tight...or you can gently drip water over your eye lashes to make it drip. Make sure not to line the tops of your eyes to avoid makeup dripping into them.
Dental Distortions creates hand made teeth that will freak everyone out! You mold them to fit you mouth, and they are not so big, so that you can still talk and sing.
