Is Face Paint Safe for Kids?
At Jest Paint we always get asked the following question: Is face paint safe for kids?
The general answer is yes, it can be safe and fun! But, in order for it to be safe and fund you must choose cosmetic-grade, non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and FDA/EU/UK-compliant products. Please avoid using craft paints like acrylics or tempera, which can irritate skin and are not designed to be used on skin.
Don't be confused by labels that say "non toxic", that simply means that if the product accidentally gets in contact with the skin it should not cause irritation, but it does not mean that it is safe to use the product all over your skin.
When looking for a face paint that you can safely apply to your skin you need to look for professional face paint brands, sold at professional face paint stores, and that are insured, FDA/EU/UK registered and compliant. Best yet if you can find brands that have a local contact to provide you with professional support. Marketplaces like Amazon, Ebay, Walmart or costume stores that pop up during Halloween and then are gone, do not have professional face painters on staff and often sell many unsafe, untested and unregulated products. If a brand is not sold at a professional face paint store, there is a reason, and we suggest you stay way from it.
Brands sold at JestPaint.com, including Fusion Body Art and Superstar, meet safety standards and are gentle on sensitive skin (according to the manufacturer). It is still always best to test a small patch before full application, especially on younger children and when in doubt, ask a doctor.
Tips: always remove face paint gently at the end of the day with warm water and mild soap; avoid using harsh makeup removers, baby wipes or scratchy sponges or cloths. Never sleep with your face paint on.
